Cement from Napoleon Grave. St Helena Island. From the Collection of Gilbert Martineau. Consisting of a glass bottle 65mm,with small fragments. At Napoleon's tomb a lot of precautions were taken by Hudson-Lowe in the burial, cement slabs,six coffins of lead and mahogany and two more layers of masonry cemented were Napoleon's resting place. Will be happy to provided a note of provenance. GILBERT MARTINEAU 1918-1995 was a French naval officer and author of several books on Napoleon an Curator of the French properties on St. Helena Island, 1956-1987. He continued to live at Longwood House for the rest of his life as well as devoting himself to the restoration of the properties. He died in La Rochelle 1995.
