The sidewheeler steamer USS Saco was a heavily armed warship commissioned during pursuit of Confederate blockade runners during the the Civil War and postwar cruised the West Indies and Caribbean including St Thomas, the gateway to the Virgin Islands. An Original US Navy Voujher for payment to GW Smith and Company at St Thomas, W.I. for removal of 1700 pounds of ash to lighten the ship for entrance to the port at St Thomas. . The 1p 8 x 14\" ptd/ink Voucher is ink signed by the Saco\'s Commander Henry Wilson and certified by Navy paymaster JQ Barton on the reverse, who certifies that the Bill for leverage was negotiated at the lowest price. The Saco and Commander Henry Wilson served throughout the Civil War.
