The Round House is a cylindrical, wood-frameresidential building at 36 Atherton Street in the Spring Hillneighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts. It was built in 1856 by hardware manufacturer,Enoch Robinson and is considered an offshoot of the octagon house-stylepopularized by phrenologist Orson Fowler. The exterior of the Round Housefeatures two flush stories, with a third stepped back behind a series ofbattlements and embrasures. Inside, thethree-story structure contains a central rotunda topped with a glass skylight,with interconnected rooms branching off on each level. There are four rooms on the first floor, sixon the second and another four on the third floor. In 1997 it sat empty,and the building was placedon the “Endangered Historic Resources”. Inthe early 2000s, the privately owned house was unoccupied, its windows removed,and the openings covered with plywood. For many years, the Round House lay neglectedand in disrepair. In 2006, a localresident and president of a general contracting firm based in Somervilleteamed up to save the house from demolition. Restoration wascompleted in 2018and the 36 Atherton Street-Round House Project received a “2019 PreservationAward” from the“Somerville Historic Preservation Commission”. The Round House is currently a single-familyprivate residence. atlasobscura It is also on this card published by “Leighton& Valentine” which was formed by the merger of the “Hugh LeightonCompany” with “Valentine & Sons”, and “Sackett & Wilhems”in 1910. Their cards were printed in thetinted halftone style of “Valentine & Sons”. They were located in Portland Me, Dundee Scotland, and Brooklyn NewYork andall their cards were printed in the UnitedStates between 1910 and 1914. Thecard is in good condition with a minor wear overall and a clean, clear image of the “Robinson Round House, Somerville Mass.”. The reverse is blank and clean.
