This is a small hand painted antiquetoleware folk art pocket tin snuff / tobacco or trinket / knickknack box. Thesmall domed pocket rectangular shaped tin box with rounded corners is made fromtin and coated in red paint called toleware. Toleware has been popular from the1700’s through the 1900’s that came in a huge variety of utensils, variationsof sizes, and materials. The lid hinge is secured to the base with spots oflead showing on the inside and out. The hinge is slightly loose due to the sidespots of lead on the inside of the hinge to the base has come loose but issecured by the lead rivets. The domed top is hand painted in a multicolored quaintand charming 1800’s period Folk Art style of geometric center patterns on a redbackground with a yellow striped border. The lead rivets combined with thequaint geometric folk are pattern suggests this piece dates to the early to mid-1800’s.As is expected with antique toleware that were utilitarian items used daily,one finds chips, loss, and wear to the paint and hand painted motif mixed withnaturally occurring dark aged patina to the tin. This small box is about 3 3/16”long x 1 7/8“ deep x 1\" tall. Weight is 1.7 oz. or 50 grams. The tophas a thin tin piece soldered to the inside that creates a lip on the top insidewith a tight-fitting lid with the inside of the base, closes and staysclosed properly, and would definitely hold snuff or tobacco securely inside. Thelid has a tiny protrusion in the top front lid to aid in opening. This would beperfect as a small snuff, tobacco, trinket, knickknack, tole ware, 1800’s, or FolkArt collection, or use as a paperweight / conversation piece, desk accessory.
