Antique Sir Thomas Lipton Steam Yacht Erin Shamrock Flagwith Corinthian Yacht Club Marblehead Massachusetts Burgee Adornment
Easy to get lost in researching this piece with no definitive explanationof what it actually is. (Sir Thomas Lipton, the America\'s Cup, Shamrock, Erin, the New York Yacht Club,Old Newspaper articles, photos, national archives movie of the Shamrock and Erin sailing at sea etc...)I am assuming Corithian Yacht Club Marblehead Massachusetts but could be wrong. Couldn\'t find this piece on any uniformsor hats from the photos that I found of the Erin\'s or Shamrocks crewmembers.I have some bits and pieces that I found that are not linked in any organized way but might help you at the bottom of the listing
What is known is that the piece Measures 4 1/8\" wide 1 1/2\" tall Weighs 25.3 grams,Features Two Beautifully Enameled Flags (Red, White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Brown)Metal is Unknown - silver plated base metal my guess. Screw-backs similar to those used on military insignias butthey do not have a sharp point that would allow them to pierce fabric. They do not have the fixtures necessary to screw them, probably an old nuts and bolts piece would fit.I do have two of these adornments, but am only listing one at this time.I\'ll revise the description in the listing if I find out anything more about this piece.

Rigged as a screw schooner, she was registered at 451½ tons net and measured 264½ feet in length with a 31½ foot beam. Powered by a triple-expansion engine fired from two Scotch boilers, she was both fast and elegant and, having once passed into Lipton\'s ownership, soon became one of the most well-known steam yachts on both sides of the Atlantic. Lipton\'s great passion was to win the America\'s Cup and Erin served as his floating base for his unsuccessful challenges in 1899, 1901 and 1903. En route to the United States for a fourth challenge when war was declared in 1914, she returned home after first being fitted out as a hospital ship. Presented to the Admiralty, who restored her original name as there was an existing Erin in the fleet, she served as a hospital ship in the Mediterranean until torpedoed and sunk in June 1915.-from the website of Charles Miller Ltd saleeers of Maritime And Scientific Models, Instruments and Fine Art
Lipton, disappointed at his challenge being rejected, was however not one to take things lying down and a co-ordinated media campaign was instigated through the yachting journals of the day that laid out his desire for change. Principally, the argument that was promoted was around safety. This was stillvery much a time where challenging vessels had to arrive in New York ‘under their own bottoms’ and this caused the challengers to be built heavier and more seaworthy to make the Atlantic crossing safely. In one journal it was pointed out by Lipton that when Shamrock II arrived in New York some “400 rivets were missing” and that she faced the Resolute: “a delicate violin, and to beat her I would need a similar violin, which could not cross the ocean.” The war of words rumbled in yachting circles on both sides of the Atlantic, but it was not until 1912 that Lipton embarked on the liner Coronia to try and persuade the NYYC to amend the rules saying: “I have a feeling they will meet me. If they don’t, they may as well bury the Cup.”
Lipton’s attempts at persuasion fell on deaf ears but unabashed, in March 1913, he issued another challenge, this time through the Royal Ulster Yacht Club, but stated that the defending yacht should not exceed 75 feet at the waterline. It was rejected once more and most vociferously with some 40 members of the NYYC voting against the terms of the challenge as it deprived them of building within the range of 65-90 feet as stipulated in the Deed of Gift. Much back and forth proceeded over the summer of 1913 with Lipton doubling down in the media and finding surprising support from the yachtsmen of Massachusetts who had form in dissent against the NYYC, reprised in a determination to see better racing for the Cup and an end to the war of words off it.
