Original sketches from the 1969 trial of the "Chicago Eight" are extremely rare. The "Chicago Eight" were 8 men who protested against the Vietnam War during the demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Conventionin Chicago. The 8 men - Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, Tom Hayden, David Dellinger, Rennie Davis, Lee Weiner, John Froines - were arrested during the demonstrations and their trial began in September 1969. Their criminal defense attorneys were Leonard Weinglass and William Kunstler. Bobby Seale was eventually separated from the group and stood trial by himself. The group was then renamed the "Chicago Seven."
This sketch is signed in the lower right by Verna Sadock, a court artist for WMAQ-TV, an NBC affiliate, from 1969 to 2012. The Chicago 8 trial was her first assignment for WMAQ. This signature matches other examples of her signature. It depicts defense attorney, Leonard Weinglass, questioning a police informant, Irwin Bock, on the witness stand. The sketch appears to have been drawn with black pen and colored markers. The artistic style and the colors look the same as other examples of her work.
This original sketch is framed and is in good condition, with no visible damage or color fading. The metal frame has many scratches (see photos). The image measures about 14.5" x 12.5"; the mat measures 2.75" on the top and sides and 3" on the bottom. The frame measures about 21.75" x 19.25" and is 1" in depth. The framed picture weighs about 6 pounds, 5 ounces. On the back board of the sketch there is a notification indicating that this framed sketch was owned at one time by Living Color Financial Displays in Miami, Florida and was loaned out for display (see photo). This company was in the business of loaning fine art for display from 1959 to 2001.
