Up for sale is a ONE OF A KIND, ORIGINAL, personal September 24, 1985 hand-signed letter, with the original envelope, from Senator Edward M. Kennedy to Mr. Stoney Cooks.
The 1-page letter, dated September 24, 1985, measures 6" x 8 1/2" and it was sent to Stoney Cooks previously of Atlanta, Georgia. Stoney and his wife, Shirley (Belefonte) Cooks, were both veterans of the early civil rights movement. Stoney Cooks worked with Dr. Martin Luther King as a staffer at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The letter is typed on Senator Kennedy's personal stationary and reads "EDWARD M. KENNEDY" at the top. IN FULL: "Just a note to thank you for all your help on my Atlanta trip. The opportunity to pay tribute to Andy Young in his hometown was a very special privilege. As always, you put together a great fundraising dinner. Stoney, I would like to enlist your talents in helping me raise a few dollars in Atlanta someday. Again, thanks for your help and friendship." The letter is signed "as ever, Ted".
Generally, the letter is in Good condition. There is a fold across the middle where it was originally folded when mailed. Some wear around the edges, and other small dings.
The 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" envelope is also in Good condition. It is from Senator Kennedy's personal stationary. It was sliced open at the top seam. It is dated Sep 24, 1985 from Washington, D.C. and has a cancelled 22 cent stamp. A few scratches and stains, as well as some other small dings.
