SHIPS at SUNSET, STE CLAIRE RIVER, GREAT LAKES WATERWAY, Detroit Phostint:
$11.99

The St. Clair River, Riviere Sainte-Claire, is a 40.5-mile-long river in central North America which flows from Lake Huron into Lake St. Clair, forming part of the international boundary between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of Michigan. The river is a significant component in the Great Lakes Waterway, whose shipping channels permit cargo vessels to travel between the upper and lower Great Lakes. The river flows in a southerly direction, connecting the southern end of Lake Huron to the northern end of Lake St. Clair. It branches into several channels near its mouth at Lake St. Clair, creating a broad delta region known as the St. Clair Flats. Like a strait, the river serves as a narrow strip of water which connects two larger bodies of water. Much of the shoreline on both sides of the River is urbanized and extensively industrialized. Intensive development has occurred in and near the adjacent cities of Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario, at the northern end of the river. The card is a “Detroit Publishing Co.” Phostint” and captures ships on the St. Clair in late evening. It is not postmarked or dated but it is a white bordered card and could be from that era, 1915-1930. It is in good condition with some wear on the corners and edges. The image is clean and clear as is the reverse. The Detroit Photographic Company Ltd., originally a printer of religious books and calendars, shifted production in 1897 when owners William A. Livingstone and Edwin H. Husher saw the potential in postcards. They became the sole American company to license the Swiss photochrom process, which they would eventually register in 1907 under the name Phostint. metropostcard
