Maker: On each piece in this set of 8 rare and beautiful antique plates is the mark of the Doulton company, one of England\'s most renowned and respected producers of fine china. The designation \"Burslem\" appears as part of that mark.
Founded in 1815, the Doulton company was originally based in Vauxhall, London, and then in Lambeth, London. It opened its Burslem, England, factory in 1882,received a royal warrant and in 1901 became Royal Doulton.
Marks and age: The Doulton Burslem crown or coronet mark that was in use from 1886 to 1892 (when the word England was added) is on each plate along with the English china pattern registration number 72067, dating to 1887.
Each plate has an artist\'s mark on the back; they differ depending on the variation.
Design:The lovely scalloped and matte-finish dessert plates are hand painted in a classic Aesthetic Movement or Art Nouveau style, with gold-outlined pastel flowers set to one side on a background that transitions from beige to a pure white center.
Five plates have the handwritten pattern number C2019 and three have the number C2014.The setincludes 4 variations that are numbered in the photos.The set is comprised of:
- 4 plates in variation A, C2019- 1 plate in variation B, C2014- 1 plate in variation C, C2019.
- 2 plates in variation D, C2014.
Condition: All 8 plates are in excellent condition for their age and fragile material with no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, stains, discoloration, repairs or significant wear. Each plate has a few light marks and scuffs consistent with over 137 years of use. One plate has a tiny spot of missing paint on the gold edge - it\'s shown in the photo with the red arrow.
Size: They are 8 7/8 inches wide and together weigh 6 pounds 3 ounces.
