Book is a black and white photographic journey along the Santa Fe from Colorado and New Mexico to Californiacovering the last 20 years of the SantaFe Railway prior to the BNSF merger. This book is a photographic journey on what the Santa Fe Railway was like westof Kansas and Texas prior to its merger with the Burlington Northern in1995.Book begins out on the plains of eastern Colorado. Santa Fe crews moves coalfrom Montana and Wyoming for the BN, to power plants in Colorado and Texas. La Junta,Colorado was the nerve center in the state, classifying and receiving a dailyfreight to and from Kansas City, Denver and Barstow, California. Trinidad eastto Kansas was part of the original Santa Fe route prior to the Belen Cutofffrom Texas.Over Raton and Glorieta Passes travel Amtrak and a few coal and freights, butthe main action is south of Albuquerque at Belen. The railroad built a fivetrack mainline around Belen to accommodate the steady stream of trains changingcrews and fueling for destinations south to the Mexican border, north toColorado, west to the Pacific and east to Texas and the Midwest. While east toTexas may be arid and windy plateaus, west is the ancient Indian Country of NewMexico and Arizona, located among colorful sandstone hills.Inhospitable as Arizona is, fifty miles east and west of Flagstaff are lustforests. Motorists traveling old Route 66 in Arizona and California rememberthe Santa Fe.At the railroad crossroads of the desert, Barstow, California, Santa Fe splitfor either Southern California or Northern California. Both routes need tocross mountains: Cajon to the west and Tehachapi to the north and both sharethe tracks with other railroads, including Union Pacific in the south andSouthern Pacific to the north. The route ends in Los Angeles and San Diego and the north route going toRichmond, east of San Francisco. The entire book is a prime example of sharp, quality black & whitephotography. You have to have this book for your library on the Santa Fe.
