This beautiful 1978 Royal Copenhagen jubilee plate was designed by Sven Vestergaard and is decorated under the glaze. The motif of the plate is James Cook who was the person who discovered Hawaii. It pays tribute to Captain James Cook on the Bicentennial of his discovery of the Sandwich Islands which is now named Hawaii. James Cook was born in England in 1728. James Cook ran away to sea at an early age. His first assignment after joining the Navy, was to survey and map the waters of Labrador and Newfoundland, where his work on an eclipse of the sun brought him to the attention of the most influential group of scientists in the world - the Royal Society. As a result, the British Admiralty equipped the bark Endeavour for a scientific expedition to the South Seas to observe an eclipse of Venus across the sun. Cook was selected as captain. His second expedition started in 1772 with the purpose of proving or disproving the existence of the \"Southern Continent\". He explored for the first time in history, the South Polar regions and put an end to the myth that there were large areas of habitable land around the South Pole. In 1776, Cook left England for the third and last time in the hope of finding a Pacific entrance to the North West passage. It was on this voyage, in 1778 that Cook discovered the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) - the subject of the 1978 Royal Copenhagen plate. The low-relief motif on the plate is hand-cut and finished in Royal Copenhagen\'s distinctive blue coloring by the hand of skilled craftsmen.
