Title: Revolutionary War Letter From Colonel Samuel Atlee Requesting Assistance in Paying Debts Incurred While Held Prisoner by the British

A letter from Colonel Samuel Atlee, Revolutionary War Colonel with the Pennsylvania Battalion of Musketry and member of the Pennsylvania Continental Congress who was captured at the Battle of Long Island in 1776. The letter was written to John Gibson, appointed Auditor General by the Continental Congress in 1776, becoming Commissioner of the Board of Treasury in 1779. In the letter, Atlee asks Gibson for assistance in paying debts incurred while held prisoner by the British:

"I am greatly embarrassed for want of the cash to pay the debts contracted for my subsistence whilst in the hands of the enemy; for relief I depend entirely upon what I shall receive from you. The Commissioner General of Prisoners accounts against the officers wit hthe enemy in my time, have been long since delivered on, so that I flatter myself little time will be required to investigate so much as concerncs me."

Toning and creasing to paper, three inch separation along center fold, one inch tear to address leaf.
