Revolutionary War-Date Deed Involved Several East Haddam Soldiers, Officers:
$235.00

EAST HADDAM, CONNECTICUT, has one of the richest histories in the Revolutionary War. More than 350 men, many quite notable, served in the war.

Pleased to offer a Revolutionary War period deed, dated March 20th, 1777, involving East Haddam and several important soldiers in the war, including CAPTAIN JABEZ CHAPMAN, SAMUEL GATES, TIMOTHY GATES, SELDEN CHAPMAN and Col. JABEZ CHAPMAN.

The deed offered here, 8 x 12 ½, is signed by Jabez Chapman (as Justice of the Peace and a witness), Selden Chapman and Ely Warner. The land involved was lying along the Salmon River and the land belonged to Ely Warner and was sold to Captain Samuel Gates, who is mentioned in the deed and the docketing on the verso.

The men involved in the land sale were steeped in their town’s efforts to provide supplies and payments to soldiers and officers during the Revolutionary War as documented in town records.

On June 26th, 1780, at a town meeting the selectmen voted to pay soldiers forty shillings in silver “either until the last of December next: for three years: or during the war...by the Treasurer of this Town...

“At a town meeting held the 16th day of November, 1780, it was voted that Col. Jabez Chapman: Capt. Samuel Gates [and others]be a Committee for the Purpose of dividing and classing all the inhabitants of this town who...are included in Militia Rolls: either of the Trainband alarm List or Companies of Horse—Into as many Classes as this Town shall be found deficient in the number of men required to complete their quota of the Continental Army...”

“At a Town Meeting Legally warned and held in East Haddam, the 16th of September: 1777...For which meeting...voted that Capt. Samuel Gates [and others] be a committee to provide the following articles for every non-commissioned officer and soldier in the Continental Army and belonging to this town one shirt or more, either linen or flannel, one hunting shirt or frock, one pair of woolen over-hauls, one or two pair of stockings and one pair of shoes...”

Toning, folds and expected wear with some ink smudging as visible in the scans and a couple of edge tears. Else quite good for a document of its age and very readable.
