From the estate of a European Bishop,a beautiful relic ofSaint John of God,

one of the most difficult saint’s relics to obtain.

This particular reliquary is outstanding!!

The relic of the Saint is very large, and the condition is remarkably just like the day it was made!

Saint John, aka Santo Juan de Dios, was a Portuguese born Spanish Soldier of fortune who, after having had a vision of the Infant Jesus who called him \"John of God.\"

He converted, and changed his ways, dedicating the rest of his life

to helping the sick, the homeless and destitute.

He founded the religious order of the Hospitallers of St. John of God,

which operates hospitals and cared for the poor and the sick throughout the world till this day.

Saint John of God is a powerful intercessor for anyone struggling with any health concerns...

He is especially called on for intercession with

heart disease and high blood pressure

as well as

alcoholism or any substance abuse.

He is the patron saint of nurses, hospitals, firefighters, Spain, all illnesses, sick, alcoholics, and those suffering in loneliness.

The sacred relic of Saint John is completely surrounded by hand painted decorations in tones of blues and reds.

Above the relic are the words:

S. Joannes de Deo,

Latin for

Saint John of God.

This reliquary dates from the mid to late 1700’s and is Italian, Vatican States in origin.

The relic is sealed with intact red silk threads. The threads are sealed with a large,

crisp red wax seal with a depiction of the

Roman god “Cupid” or perhaps an Angel

in the shield on the coat of arms.

The entire reliquary is in exceptional condition. This reliquary was clearly never displayed in bright light. It was encased in a larger theca which protected it over the years from dirt, dust, smoke and UV light.

The colors, both on the hand painted reliquary, and the marbleized paper behind the wax seal are both in such beautiful, unfaded, like new condition. It’s rare to be able to see the original vivid colors after 250+ years!!

Profile

Juan grew up working as a shepherd in the Castile region of Spain. He led a wild and mispent youth, and traveled over much of Europe and north Africa as a soldier in the army of Charles V, and as a mercenary. Fought through a brief period of insanity. Peddled religious books and pictures in Gibraltar, though without any religious conviction himself. In his 40\'s he received a vision of the Infant Jesus who called him John of God. To make up for the misery he had caused as a soldier, he left the military, rented a house in Granada, Spain, and began caring for the sick, poor, homeless and unwanted. He gave what he had, begged for those who could not, carried those who could not move on their own, and converted both his patients and those who saw him work with them. Friend of Saint John of Avila, on whom he tried to model his life. John founded the Order of Charity and the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of God.
