Here is a rare one! This postcard shows a nice early view of a small town company railroad line in the Adirondacks. Men sit atop the steam locomotive in the snow! The side of the tender readsDe Grasse Paper Company.
The Degrasse Paper Company had its offices in Carthage, NY and its paper mill in the Adirondack foothill village of Pyrites. The paper company had a twenty year contract with the New York World newspaper to provide a million dollars worth of paper a year. Pyrites is in the Town of Canton. The community was originally known as \"Long Rapids\".The DeGrasse River Paper Company started processing pulp wood and making newsprint in 1904. At its peak, the mill was churning out 200 tons of newsprint a day, which was loaded onto company locomotives and sent to New York City. Some of the equipment: three pulp-steaming boilers, twelve foot wide paper machines, a building entirely devoted to chipping spruce and hemlock. The whole operation depended on acid made fromiron disulfide– iron pyrite - which is also known as \"fool\'s gold,\" and which was abundant in the area. That\'s where Pyrites gets its name.
Card back is divided and is not postmarked. Condition is good as shown. Guaranteed vintage and original. The watermark is not on the postcard you are buying here.
