Rare c1908 Postcard Bingham Canyon Utah - Ghost Town Race Mormon Mining Town UT:
$499.99

This rare c1908 real photo postcard features a race down the streets of Bingham, Utah, an old mining ghost town. This town had an association withBrigham Young in its early days.

Approximate size: 5.4 inches x 3.4 inches

There are a fair amount of postcards and images of Bingham around the 1940s and 1950s, as mining was booming around then, but those around 1910 is much more rare.

The reference photo (not included in the purchase) is a newspaper clipping of the The Salt Lake tribune (Salt Lake City, Utah), September 9, 1908. It discusses a C.H. Lashbrook, which could be the owner of the Lashbrook\'s Store pictured in the postcard. The newspaper advertisement, best to my knowledge, is discussing how a company collected debts for C.H. Lashbrook.

Also notice the hardware and plumbing sign in the background.

Bingham Canyon, located in the Oquirrh Mountains approximately twenty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, is known for its rich mining history. The area was first settled in August 1848 by two Mormon pioneers, Thomas and Sanford Bingham, who settled in this narrow wilderness canyon to herd cattle.

Over time, the area became a supplier of timber for local sawmills, and much of the timber used in the construction of the Salt Lake Tabernacle came from this canyon.

In 1850, the Bingham brothers took samples of assayed ore to Brigham Young, who advised them not to engage in mining at that time.

Following the discovery of silver and gold-containing ore in the fall of 1863, the west mountain mining district, encompassing the entire Oquirrh range, was organized.

The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom.

The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine.

The Bingham Canyon area boomed during the first years of the twentieth century, as rich copper deposits in the canyon began to be developed, and at its peak the city had approximately 15,000 residents. The success of the local mines eventually proved to be the town’s undoing, however: by the mid-twentieth century, the huge open-pit Bingham Canyon Mine began encroaching on the land of the community, causing residents to relocate. By the 1970s, almost the entirety of the town had been devoured by the mine, and the few remaining residents voted to dis-incorporate and abandon the community. No trace of Bingham Canyon remains today.
