The U.S.S. Northampton (1930-1942) CA-26 of WWII was a heavy cruiser, the lead of her class. She served in the Pacific theater, was at sea with Admiral Halsey during the Pearl Harbor attack, was involved with various battles, was with the USS Hornet for the Doolittle raid, was part of the Battle of Midway, at Guadalcanal, and towed the stricken USS Hornet during the battle of Santa Cruz Islands. Finally during theBattle of Tassafaronga in 1942 she was torpedoed by Japanese submarines and sank.
Interestingly, the title is for the U.S.S. Northampton (not simply Northampton-class), but the printing code on the bottom of the rear cover includes USS Chicago. The U.S.S. Chicago CA-29 was a Northhampton-class cruiser that was also in the Pacific theater. Survived a midget submarine attack, Coral Sea and Savo Island battles, and was finally sunk during the Battle of the Solomon Islands by Japanese aerial torpedoes.

This came from the collection of a WWII sailor who had cruiser and destroyer and tin can related materials (other materials will be listed separately). This sailor served on the U.S.S. Northampton, and his training record was signed by the captain of the Northampton in 1941 (training record is not included in this listing).

Used, as-is. Creases. Staples are rusty. Stains, dirt, wear. All pages are present. Pencil writing on back cover. See attached pictures. Ruler in pictures is not included in sale.
I like to think the names written on the rear cover with pennies and dollar amounts are poker winnings from the sailor\'s shipmates, or maybe what he owes them for cigarettes, but we have no evidence of what they actually are.
