Rare Vintage 6\" ANRI Hand Carved Wood Statue of SAINT THERESE OF LISIEUX ~ Italy:
$150.00

This hard to find1950\'sstatuette is a lovely depiction of Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower of Jesus, as a young Carmelite nun.
She is wearing the brown habit and mantle of the Carmelite order and is holding a crucifix and a bouquet of roses to her heart.

Sainte Therese is the patron saint of florists, foreign missions, loss of parents, priests, and the sick.
Her feast day is October 1st.

This beautiful statue is carved entirely of wood.
Every single carved detail was intricately chiseled by hand and hand brushed with oil based paint.

This decorative sculpture stands about 6\" tall x 2\" wide.

The bottom is marked “Handcarved in Italy,” and has the remains of an ANRI sticker affixed to it
(Note: see last photo taken from the internet - it shows what the sticker would have looked like complete, and proves that this is indeed an ANRI).

This piece is in excellent condition – no chips, cracks, or repairs - however, it could benefit from a gentle cleaning with a Q-tip to remove some embedded dust, which I’ll leave up to her new owner.

Truly an exceptional carving for something so small in scale… Don’t miss out!

Please study all photos as they are part of the description and might reveal something I missed.

Copied from the internet:

St.Therese of Lisieux is the patron saint of florists, foreign missions, loss of parents, priests, and the sick (particularly those with tuberculosis). St.Therese was named the patron saint of foreign missions in 1927 by Pope Pius XI. This may seem like an odd connection, considering she was a cloistered nun; however, she often expressed her desire to be a missionary and spread the love of God throughout the world. Because of her prayers for people the world over from within the cloister, she was bestowed with this patronage.

Thérèse of Lisieux was born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin. Don’t let the “de Lisieux” fool you: she was born in Alençon, France, in 1873. Thérèse moved to Lisieux after her mother died, when she was barely 4 and a half years old.

Thérèse is also known as St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, as that was the name that she chose for herself when she joined the Discalced Carmelites. But she is known, perhaps more popularly, as “The Little Flower” — a nickname that alludes to a passage in her memoir, Story of a Soul.

Ten years after her mother died, in 1887, Thérèse approached her 63-year-old father Louis one Sunday afternoon and told him that she wanted to enter Carmel before Christmas. Louis picked a little white flower from the garden they were sitting in and gave it to her, explaining the care with which God brought it into being and preserved it until that day. Thérèse later wrote: “While I listened,
I believed I was hearing my own story.” To Therese, the flower seemed a symbol of herself, “destined to live in another soil.”

Whereas sometimes Teresa de Ávila is also referred to as “Teresa La Grande” (the Great One), in French Thérèse de Lisieux is also known as “la petite Thérèse,” little Thérèse. In Spanish, she is often called “Teresita,” in the diminutive, to distinguish her from Teresa de Jesús. She always represented holding a crucifix covered with roses in her arms. Tradition claims that if you pray a novena to St. Thérèse, she will eventually give you a rose. This reference too comes from a passage in her autobiography.

Shortly before she died, she wrote “my mission, to make God loved, will begin after my death […] I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses.”
