This 1889 signed cabinet card features Samuel Davis Bates, the first republican state senator from the 27th district. This cabinet card is signed. At the time of writing this, nothing else of him, signed or otherwise, is available for sale anywhere online. This piece is quite rare.Approximate size: 6.4 inches x 4.25 inches Samuel Davis Bates was a Republican State Senator for Pennsylvania. He represented the 27th district, which included Northumberland, Snyder, and Union Counties from 1889 to 1892. Bates was born on November 15, 1833, in Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont, and later relocated to Union County, Pennsylvania. He worked at Slifer, Walls, and Shriner Manufacturing and eventually became the superintendent of the Central Manufacturing Company in Lewisburg. He also served as a Lewisburg school director and town council member.
During the Civil War, Bates served as a lieutenant in the 1862 Emergency Militia, Third Regiment, and the 28th Regiment in 1863. He was a member of the board of directors for several companies, including the Lewisburg Nail Works, Lewisburg Bridge Company, and Central Manufacturing Company. Bates was the first Republican elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate from the 27th district after 1874. He passed away on December 28, 1906, due to an asthma attack and was interred at the Lewisburg Cemetery in Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania.
The bottom-front was autographed and hand-signed in period ink: \"S. D. Bates\".
