Here offered is a very rare specimen of beautiful pink-orange rhodochrosite crystals covering the front of the specimen as well as the vugs. The Dr Geier Mine is located just south of Bingen on the Rhine River. I used to live only a few kilometers from this mine and drove past it often. The mine began production in 1840 with the oldest mines in the area dating back to the 1600s. They mined manganese continuously till the ore reserves ran out and they closed the mine in 1971. Specimens form this mine are not very common on the market even in Germany. Specimens are highly sought after since there are so few on the market and it is a classic locality that produced some of the most beautiful rhodos in Germany.The specimen has 2 large vugs on the front and top that are covered in beautiful botryoidal rhodochrosite crystals. The matrix consists of iron-manganese ore, the type that was mined and is criss-crossed by a lot of veinlets of rhodochrosite. The veinlets are mostly massive rhodo but there are a few small crystals here and there.Amazing rare specimen from a classic German locality and the only one I have. It comes with 3 labels, 2 modern and one is likely from the 1950s or earlier.
