This is a rare, Prussian military painted canvas-covered glass water flask or canteen bottle that was personalized as a service gift for an infantry soldier entering the army reserves. He was in active service from 1886 to 1889 in the 132nd Infantry Regiment (numerals 1 and 3 are attached, 2 is missing) also known as the 1st Lower Alsation Regiment. It was formed in 1881 with its headquarters in Strasbourg and was part of the German XV Army Corps before WW1. The covering on the back of the flask is cut out in a heart shape to reveal a cartoon drawing of an infantry soldier holding the hand of a weeping woman. The caption on the cartoon "Wiene nicht Ich kamm bald wieder ab es wahn ist?" loosely translates to " Don't cry, I'll come back soon, but is that crazy?" The flask measures about 7.5" tall overall and 4" wide and the base is 3" across. The stitching is still intact and the overall condition is good considering the ageas shown in the photographa, A very unique piece of militaria to add to your collection.
