[FIRST EDITION] (Np): Privately Printed for Members of the Society, 1932. Hardcover in decorated cloth boards, issued without dust jacket. 159 pages with b/w block-printed illustrations. With signed presentation plate on front paste-down (plus embossed stamp on ffep) of previous owner, M. Toscan Bennett (*see below) the plate additionally signed by A. P. Wallace, Master of the Society.
Includes brewing recipes for alcoholic beverages and a general history of the subject. Interesting title, some of the chapter headings including: "The General Principles of Modern Domestic Brewing," "The Domestic Brewing of the Olden Time," "A Bibulous Glossary of Old & New Words..."
Good overall condition with light wear and soiling to covers, occasional penciling; the binding is tight and clean, an attractive copy overall; NOT EX-LIBRARY. (amz)

Martin Toscan Bennett, Jr. (September 5, 1901 - May 11, 1987) was the Chief of Staff for the Reparations Mission to the Far East and Europe in 1946, and Chief Advisor to the War Production Board from 1942 to 1943.
Bennett was born on September 5, 1901 in Hartford, Connecticut, as the son of Martin Toscan Bennett and Josephine Day. His long and distinguished career as a consulting engineer and industrial economist began in Wisconsin, where in 1925 and 1935 he earned a BS and CE degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin. For the next 11 years, he held positions with the Public Service Commissions in Wisconsin and New York state. Shortly after Pearl Harbor in 1941, he was appointed to the staff of the Power Branch of the War Production Board, where he served as chief of the Gas Production Board. In 1943, he formed the firm of Martin Toscan Bennett Associates Incorporated, in which he continued his government activities as a consultant to the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Board of Economic Warfare and the Foreign Economic Administration. As an expert in pipeline safety, he was retained by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities in 1951 to prepare regulations for construction of gas lines. As a consultant to New York City, he evaluated the design and the inspection procedures in respect to public safety.
He was also highly respected by the Navaho, Wind River, Fort Peck Indian, Black Feet, and other tribes for guidance with respect to the economic development of their mineral resources, particularly oil and gas, an area in which he was a pioneer. He was particularly proud of the fact that Navaho leases provided college scholarships to Navaho youths.
