Rare Petrified Fossilized Mushroom Leesburg Lake County,Florida: $5000.00
For your consideration this is a rare example of petrified fungus (mushroom?) found back in the 1930’s in Lake County, Florida, Specifically when Lake Harris was being dredged in construction of a bridge. It was found preserved in petrified chunks of what appeared to be tree sap. I bought it from a gentleman named Robert Cauthen at an estate of an old Lake County family who had a large Victorian house of 25 acres directly on the lake. Mr. Cauthen sold me all the arrowheads, Indian artifacts and fossils this family collected over decades on the property which was on a hill. The head of the mushroom? is detached from the stem. “When you consider the odds, the chances of this thing being here—the sheer obstacles it had to overcome to get from where it was growing into the lake or swamp, be mineralized and preserved for millions of years—have to be incredibly remote.”The Pileus measures 3 inches in height and 3 across. The stipe measures 2 inches in length.
