Rare Native Gold, Malachite & Scorodite? Phoenix Mine Cabarrus North Carolina:
$50.00

Here offered is a fabulous specimen of the rich gold ore that was mined at the Phoenix Mine, a famous mine in NC! Specimens from the mine are exceptionally rare as the mine was covered over by a golf course many years ago. I have never seen a gold specimen from this mine even though it was one of the largest producers in NC history! This rare specimen features lots of disseminated flakes of gold in heavily oxidized quartz along with iron-rich gossan that would have been right on the boundary between the gossan and oxidized zone. Looking at it from the outside, one could easily mistake it for straight-up gossan. It is highly unusual that gold would occur in this zone around gossan. The specimen features lots of tiny scattered specks of native gold throughout the vugs left behind by the dissolution of pyrite. The heavy gossan does make it hard to spot gold in all the crevices. A piece that I tested that came from the same piece as this specimen is loaded with gold in the crevices of where the pyrite was. The only reason I can see the gold though is because I used iron-out to heavily clean the specimen to see if there was gold in the cracks and crevices. The best way to view the gold in the specimen is by using a microscope and carefully scanning each vug since it's often partially encrusted by limonitic gossan. At one of the blue arrows, is a small cluster of malachite crystals that is quite superb to view under the microscope. Also of interest, are multiple vugs lined with yellow trigonal (as far as I can tell) crystals, I'm fairly sure they are scorodite, something I've never found in NC before (pics 5-7)!! Some of them could be pharmacosiderite as well. There are also some metallic flakes in the ore portion of the specimen that I suspect is tetradymite, one of the only recorded places in NC with this rare bismuth Telluride (last photo). It would require some analysis work to know for sure. I have placed red arrows on a few of the gold flakes and blue arrows on other minerals off interest.Imagine how much gold there is in all the dozens and dozens of cracks, vugs, and crevices inside the specimen! Incredibly rare piece you don't want to miss out on. I've never seen another specimen like it from the famous Phoenix mine and definitely never another gold specimen!11x5.5x1.7 cm
