This amazing mask is composed with delicate features and an elegant coiffure, fine dark patina, highlighted with blue, red and black. The triple-crested coiffure is a naturalistic representation of hairstyle actually worn by young girls of the region. The form of the central crest, recalling a cogwheel, presumably derived from the former custom of attaching brass coins to the hair.
About the mask:These masks represent the spirit of a girl; its shape, physiological features and complex hairstyle are the characteristic of feminine beauty in Igbos. The young people wear these masks during the initiation ceremonies.
Condition: overall great condition - normal wear since it\'s vintage. There is a missing knob on one of the small loops as shown and another is broken.
