Rare Historic Fort Pitt in 1759 Map, copyright 1905 Antique 3D Relief Lithograph:
$675.00

RAREANTIQUEHISTORICAL MAP OF FORT PITT (IN 1759) per mapThis item has been in my family for over 40 years. Unfortunately, prior to coming into my possession, a recent event occurred where another family member decided to remove this item from it\'s frame. That was a negative action in my view, as they were not qualified to handle such an item of antiquity. In any event, as you can see from the photos, the map itself is in really good condition. To the top left corner of the map, there is a slight wear that shows part of the brown craft colored layer beneath. Also, very slight rubbing to the left side edge also revealing some brown craft type layer beneath. In the lower left hand corner of the map it reads, \"FORT PITT IN 1759\". In the bottom right quadrant of the item, up against the river that would be the Monongahela River, it reads, \"COPYRIGHT 1905 WOODWARD TIERNAN PRINTING CO\". It is pretty cleverly disguised so as to not be obvious. This map is similar to a map that the Heinz History Center holds in their print and photographs collection. Due to copyright issues, I am not able to share that photo with you, but if you are at all handy at internet sleuthing, you can visit the museum collections for the Heinz History Center and search up \"Woodward & Tiernan\" and you should see this as one of three current holdings that match the term \"woodward\" in particular. This map, up for sale, appears to me be is much better condition, but you need to review the photograph and judge for yourself. :-) Don\'t take my word for it!
The map itself is representative of a rare and original art etching photograph print from Woodward & Tiernan Printing Co., St. Louis, Mo. This is essentially a 3D lithograph photographic print with raised relief of the Fort Pitt as stated in 1759. I\'ve only seen one other print of a different subject like this elsewhere online by this printer. Search for yourself! The approximate measurement of the map itself is 15 3/8\" x 10 3/8\". As you can see in the photos, there is backing board that is black in color that this map is mounted to. The mounting is firm. I personally, would not attempt to remove it. The top left quadrant reads, \"220 FOURTH AVENUE\"; the top right quadrant reads, \"PITTSBURGH, PA.\"; the bottom left quadrant reads, \"CAPITAL, $1,000,000.00\"; and the bottom right reads, \"SAFE DEPOSIT BOXES\". The bottom right section, as you can see in the photographs is broken from the balance of the piece. Also, barely visible, as some type of silver embossing ink was used, but above, \"CAPITAL $1,000,000.00\" and under, \"FORT PITT IN 1759\" it reads, \"WOODWARD AND TIERNAN PRINTING CO ST LOUIS\". The approximate measurement of the black backer board itself is 19 1/8\" x 13 5/8\".
I don\'t know for certain, but one can only presume that this map was mounted to the above described backer board and used as part of some bank promotion. I say that because the location for the address noted above was the address for Farmers National Deposit Bank in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That bank itself has an interesting history that you can read about elsewhere, but for the time, onto the next item in this listing -- the ivory matting.
I should say, what remains of the ivory matting. As you can see from the photos, only the left side and bottom remains. There is water damage apparently as photographed. On the left side it reads, \"Copyright 1904 by Otis H. Kean, Inc., New York\". This item will be carefully wrapped and packaged, please note however; Seller is not responsible for any further breakdown of this item in transit. Please select your carrier carefully given shipping options. This item is over 118 years old and it is to be anticipated that the flecking of the paper to the reverse backer board, as show in the one photo of some flecks that came off, even in my gingerly handling for photos, may further occur. The backer board is brittle to the reverse. The map itself as mounted to the backer board is solid. You have a great opportunity to own a museum quality piece, which, in my humble opinion, is in an even better condition for the map itself, than a museum currently possess. Please give this historic map, the love and appreciation that it deserves with an antiquity cleaning and restoration. It will really shine!
Any questions, just send me a message.
