Rare Hand Carved Wood Asian Longevity Statue Shou Xing God VTG Chinese 2 Ft Tall:

From an estate: an old (antique? exact vintage unknown)large (rare to find one this size)hand carved Chinese wood, likely rosewood, statue of Shou Lao aka Shou Xing, the immortal God of wisdom and longevity. This unusually large statue measures 24 inches tall. Mounted on a round metal plate base, affixed with 3 (replacement) brass screws. Felt protectors underneath.

Shou Xing has a very large domed forehead (for holding all that wisdom), a long beard, grasps a tall intricately carved cane in his right hand, and a piece of fruit (the peach of immortality) in his left. A sacred crane stands beside him. He has one glass eye (the other is missing). The crane also has a glass eye. There are some fissures in the wood due to age. We note a small chip on the back side of the cane, and another very tiny one (perhaps 1/8 inch) on the robe. The statue weighs over 13 pounds.

Though greatly reveredas the god of longevity (shou), Shouxinghas no temples. Instead, birthday parties for elders provide a fitting time for visitors to bow before his statue, which is draped in embroidered silk robes. Artistic representations often depict Shouxing as a bearded old man with a high brow and a crooked staff in one hand. He holds the peach of immortality in his other hand. A stork or turtle is often added as a further symbol of longevity, which the Chinese view as a special blessing.”
