Fulgurite from the Stoneham area in Colorado which is famous throughout the mineral world for its occurrence of stunning blue barite crystals. The white ash surrounding the fulgurites are from the middle Tertiary (Oligocene) age, melting ancient volcanic ash and fusing it into this fulgurite.
Fulgurites are known asthe Stone of Zeus the Sky God of Greek mythology. Fulgurites are formed when lightning strikes the ground and melts the surrounding sand.
Only 3 stones on earth are found that have the Buckminster Fullerenes, Meteorites, Elite Shungite and Fulgurites. The elite Shungite has C60, Fulgurites have both C60 and C70 fullerenes. Barite crystals near Stoneham occur in a near-white clay bed at the base of the Chadron Formation of the White River Group of sedimentary rocks, of middle Tertiary (Oligocene) age.
