Charles Cecil John Manners, 6th Duke of Rutland KG (16 May 1815 – 3 March 1888, in Belvoir Castle), styled Marquess of Granby before 1857, was an English Conservative politician. The “Duke of Rutland” is a title in the Peerage of England, named after Rutland, a county in the East Midlands of England. The title has been created three times, and the ninth earl of the third creation was made duke in 1703. The title continues in the family line of the Manners family.
The current holder of the title is David Charles Robert Manners, the 11th Duke. He was born on May 8, 1959, and succeeded his father in the titles on January 4, 1999. He resides at Belvoir Castle and Haddon Hall. The Sunday Times Rich List 2013 estimated his personal fortune at £125 million.
The heir apparent to the dukedom has the privilege of using the courtesy title of Marquess of Granby. The most notable Marquess of Granby was John Manners (1721–1770), eldest son of the third Duke.Rutland, also known as Rutlandshire in archaic terms, is a ceremonial county located in the East Midlands of England. It shares its borders with Leicestershire to the north and west, Lincolnshire to the north-east, and Northamptonshire to the south-west. The county is predominantly rural with only two towns, Oakham and Uppingham, both situated in the west of the county.
Covering an area of 382 km² (147 sq mi), Rutland has a small population, making it the second-smallest ceremonial county population after the City of London. Historically, Rutland was the smallest county in England, a fact that is reflected in the motto of the county council: Multum in Parvo, which translates to “much in little”.The first reference photo is a caricature by Coïdé published in Vanity Fair in 1871.
The second reference photo was taken by John Jabez Edwin Mayall in the 1860s.
