Glassworkers in the U.S., decked out in their finest clothes and labor union colors, marched in the July 4th and Labor Day parades to show union solidarity, proudly carrying their glass canes.Glass canes had superstitious and practical uses as well. They were conspicuously hung above mantels and doorways, as well as in pubs in England. Glassworkers believed the canes kept evil spirits away.
