Mehmed VI Vahideddin(Ottoman Turkish:محمد سادسMeḥmed-i sâdisorوحيد الدينVahîdeddin;Turkish:VI. MehmedorVahdeddin; 14 January 1861 – 16 May 1926), also known asŞahbaba(lit. 'Emperor-father') among theOsmanoğlu family, was the36th and last Sultanof theOttoman Empire, reigning from 4 July 1918 until 1 November 1922, when theOttoman Empire was dissolved after World War Iand replaced by theRepublic of Turkeyon 29 October 1923.
The brother ofMehmed V, he became heir to the throne in 1916, after the suicide ofAbdülaziz'sson,Şehzade Yusuf Izzeddin, as the eldest male member of theHouse of Osman. He acceded to the throne after the death of Mehmed V. He was girded with theSword of Osmanon 4 July 1918 as the thirty-sixthpadishah. His father was SultanAbdulmejid I, and his mother wasGülüstü Hanım(1830–1865). She was an ethnicAbkhaz, the daughter of Prince Tahir Bey Chachba, who was originally named Fatma Chachba.
Mehmed stepped down when theOttoman Sultanate was abolishedin 1922 and the secular Republic of Turkey was created, withMustafa Kemal Atatürkas the first president.
