Rare Antique Persian Chibouk Pipe * Hand-carved, Hand-painted * Qajar Dynasty:

This beautiful and rare antique Persian smoking pipe, called a chibouk, was purchased by my great-aunt in the Middle East in 1967 but it was already an antique when she bought it. This traditional three-part tobacco pipe is made of wood and is ornamented with hand-painted relief carvings of two deer grazing amongst flowering foliage. Such themes (flora and fauna) were popular decorative elements during the Qajar Dynasty of the 19th century, but I can’t be certain of this pipe’s exact age. All together, this pipe measures about 15 inches from bowl to mouthpiece.

Chibouk pipes consist of three distinct parts that can be disassembled. There’s the bowl that holds the tobacco, carved of wood and lined with clay to make it flame proof; the beautiful polychrome stem painted in hues of cream, blue, green, and red; and the mouthpiece adorned with roses in relief. Note that the mouthpiece here has come detached from the stem, so you might want to glue it back on. In good condition, except for some chipped paint and shellac on the mouthpiece where it would have attached to the stem.
