“PATMAY 29 1887, 1888” on the other side Iused a lighted magnifying glass to read this The horizontal and both verticallevel bubbles are visible and move, although they are a little hard to see dueto the way the level was built Some soiling/staining on the topand bottom of level (see photos) Overall, a nice example of thisvery collectible item “THE DAVIS LEVEL AND TOOLCOMPANY. There is probably no sectionof our country where machinists\' and mechanics\' tools are used, that the nameof the Davis Level and Tool Company is not also familiar, and for that, matterhardly any part of the civilized globe. The extent of this company\'soperations, the character of their productions, their contributions to theindustrial thrift of the city, and the notoriety their products have givenSpringfield as a first-class manufacturing center, all combine to make it aconcern whose benefits are incalculable, and whose wide-spread and far-reachingtrade stamp it as the peer of any similar establishment in the the wholecountry.
This enterprise was originallyestablished in 1867 at Chicopee Falls, by its present sole proprietor, Mr. L.L. Davis. Soon after its inception the present style was adopted, and in 1875the works were, removed to this city. Itwas not until some time after its establishment that the house was marked byany particular degree of prominence, when the company secured several valuablepatents, both by purchase and upon inventions of the proprietor, the adoptionof which and the manufacture of the products have given them a nationalreputation.”
