Received a degree of D.D. from Bowdoin College.Served as Secretary for the Massachusetts Temperance Society (1865 - 1870)Secretary Congressional Temperance Society (Wash. D.C. 1870 -)
His son \"Rev. John White Chickering Jr.\" also became afamous Professor /Botanist (collecting plant samples)
