Rare And Wonderful Late 17th Century English/Dutch Pewter Campaign Flask For Sale
Rare And Wonderful Late 17th Century English/Dutch Pewter Campaign Flask:
Rare Late 17th Century English/Dutch Pewter Campaign Flask.
This substantial and impressive 325 plus year old flask is historically significant. On one side William of Orange (and future King William III) on horseback surmounts a town or city, and on the other is the date 1677 and various initials surrounded by a wreath, all wonderfully engraved. I’ve been told that the flask could date to the period when William ruled England (1689-1702) and the date 1677 commemorates William’s marriage to Mary, the eldest daughter of James the Duke of York and future James II (1685 - 1688). This marriage put the Dutch leader in line to succeed James and when the Glorious Revolution ousted James in 1688 William and Mary ascended the throne.
During his reign England embarked on a number of conflicts that would stretch into the 18th century including the Nine Years War and War of the Spanish Succession. This flask might well have been carried by a well-to-do officer on campaign and passed down through the family to grace the baggage of future soldiers into the Revolution and beyond. The flask bears various makers and pewter marks and is a terrific piece of history and display piece.
