Rare And Important Antique Arts And Crafts Fabric. This incredible fabric was made in Britton in 1929 by Morton Sundour . It’s from the Haslemere collection released in 1929 . The fabrics are super rare, there is a sample of this one in the Victoria Albert museum collection . I’ve not found a surviving example elsewhere.
This is a huge piece in Perfect condition. It has fold lines but they iron out. It’s quite sturdy and has never been used . It’s 120” long ( three full yards! ) and 35” wide. I posted images of the trellis pattern upright and sideways to maybe give a feel for it.
The Haslemere collection was of course a celebration of the arts and crafts movement . Haslemere was central to the movement with its Peasent Industries. A series of Workshops set up by Joseph and Maude King and by Godfrey and Ethel Blount.
Haslemere holds a special place in my heart, I would love to have been there in the 1880s 1890s……
“”Towards the end of the 19th century, several well-known and influential artists, poets, writers and craftsmen, including Alfred Lord Tennyson, had made their home in Haslemere. Perhaps attracted by the growing population of likeminded people moving out of London, both Joseph and Maude King and Godfrey and Ethel Blount made the move to Haslemere within two years of each other. Having been inspired by those peasant communities in Europe, that still maintained flourishing 'Peasant Arts' industries, the Kings and the Blounts developed a number of different craft workshops in Haslemere. These became known as the Haslemere Peasant Industries.””
