3-Piece JapaneseKamakura-Bori Sylvan Theme Lacquered, Lidded Bowl and Tray The 3-piece set is rare to find with all the pieces. Set measures 9 3/8 inches overall diameter, 4 inchesoverall height. Bowl 7 inches diameter Lid 6 inches diameter Sylvan theme: The trayfeatures a leaf design, the bowl with lid resembles an acorn, and the lidhandle design is that of the stem atop the acorn. Vintage early 1960s. This bowl waspresented to my father-in-law, a college professor, by a graduate student from Japan.The token was particularly notable since my father-in-law, a WWII Navy veteranand Purple Heart recipient, fought in the South Pacific, and survived his ship beingdestroyed by Kamikaze. The bowl was prominentlydisplayed for the remainder of his lifetime. About Kamakura-Bori: Kamakura-bori(Kamakura wood carving) involves hand-carving and painting with repeated coatsof lacquer in black and vermilion. The wood is carefully selected Katsurawood from the Hokkaido region in Japan, and the process requires more than ayear to condition the wood to be ready for carving (drying, tempering, and seasoning). Theblack and vermillion pigments used to make the paint are entirely from localsources.
