This rare photo shows the football / soccer team of the SS Maharaja, built by the same shipbuilder who made the ill-fated RMS Titanic.

The SS Maharaja was a significant ship in the history of maritime travel. It was involved in the transportation of post-partition refugees to the Andaman Islands in late 1949. The refugees boarded the SS Maharaja, welcoming the stormy seas as their final rite of passage to freedom and safety. In the 1950s, the SS Maharaja was the only public mode of transportation to Port Blair, making about 18 voyages a year or roughly one trip every three weeks.The SS. Maharaja was built by the Harland & Wolff for The Asiatic Steam Navigation Company. Harland & Wolff is a renowned British shipbuilding and fabrication company. Established in 1861 by Edward James Harland and Gustav Wilhelm Wolff, the company has its headquarters in London, with additional sites in Belfast, Arnish, Appledore, and Methil.
The company is known for its specialization in ship repair, shipbuilding, and offshore construction. It gained fame for building the majority of the ocean liners for the White Star Line, which included the iconic Olympic-class trio – RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic, and HMHS Britannic.
In the present day, Harland & Wolff supports a diverse range of sectors including Defence, Energy, Cruise & Ferry, Renewables, and Commercial. This company was developed to operate cargo and passenger services in the Bay of Bengal. It received active support from both Thomas H. Ismay and William Imrie of the White Star Line. The company was later acquired by the British India Steam Navigation Company.
The British India Steam Navigation Company, often referred to as “BI”, was formed in 1856 as the Calcutta and Burmah Steam Navigation Company. The company was initially formed out of Mackinnon, Mackenzie & Co, a trading partnership of the Scots William Mackinnon and Robert Mackenzie, to carry mail between Calcutta and Rangoon. It became the British India Steam Navigation Company in 1862.
Under the leadership of Lord Inchcape, who became chairman in 1913, the company became part of the P&O group of companies in 1914 through a complex amalgamation. However, it continued with its own identity and organization for nearly 60 years until 1972, when it was entirely absorbed into P&O. P&O was eventually sold to the Emirati logistics company DP World in 2006.
As one of the largest shipowners of all time, the company owned more than 500 ships and managed 150 more for other owners. At its height in 1922, BI had more than 160 ships in the fleet, many of which were built on Clydeside, Scotland. The main shipping routes of the line were from Britain to India, Australia, Kenya, and Tanganyika. The company also ran services from India to Pakistan, Ceylon, the Bay of Bengal, Singapore, Malaya, Java, Thailand, Japan, the Persian Gulf, East Africa, and South Africa.
BI had a long history of service to the British and Indian governments through trooping and other military contracts. In the last decade of its operational existence, BI carried thousands of school children on educational cruises. Some of the company’s better-known passenger ships included Rajula, Dunera, Scindia, Sirdhana, Leicestershire, Dwarka, Dumra, the sister ships Kampala and Karanja, and Kenya and Uganda, and Dara, which was sunk by a terrorist bomb in 1961. Nevasa of 1956 was the final passenger ship built for BI.
