Rare 1921 Postcard Polish-Soviet War with Latvia Soldiers Friends Horseback RPPC:
$19.99

This rare 1921 real photo postcard depicts Latvia soldiers on horseback as part of the Polish-Soviet War.

This postcard is dated 1921 (bottom left, front of postcard, which would put this right at the end of the Polish-Soviet war, which Latvia (top left, back of the postcard) was involved in, allied with Poland and Ukraine. The three countries fought together against the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution, on territories which were formerly held by the Russian Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

As there had not been a military resolution to the conflict (the Red Army, despite many defeats, had not been destroyed), all sides decided to cease their fighting. The Polish Council of National Defense ruled that Poland could not afford to continue fighting the war. \"Poland must conclude a peace even without guarantees of its durability\" – declared Foreign Minister Eustachy Sapieha. Limited continuation of the current offensive was enacted (until the armistice) to improve Poland\'s bargaining position, which included fighting from Latvia.

Notice in the image the two soldiers are carrying firearms and swords, which would make this one of the last conflicts where both were used in battle. There were some scant use of polish cavalry using swords in battle as late as 1936, but by 1921, almost all armies have phased it out.

I couldn\'t make much out of the Latvian on the back of the postcard, but I seemed to make out that these two men were friends and in the service together. It\'s entirely possible that these two young men grew up in the same town, volunteered for service, and were caught up in a war against one of the largest armies on the continent.

Hold history in your hands and add this historic postcard to your collection. This is a neat, rare piece, and there aren\'t many postcards of this war out there, certainly not many of real photo postcards.

Please inspect the pictures, as they give the best representation of condition. May have discoloring, edge or corner wear, marks, creases, fading, smudges, corner or edge bends, tears, or corners missing.
