Rare 1909 RPPC Postcard Tornado Aftermath Wreck Platte, SD H.W. Reimer Hardware Store South Dakota

This real picture postcard depicts the aftermath of the 1909 tornado that tore through Platte, South Dakota. This may have been part of the great weather system of April 29th-May 1st 1909, which saw many tornadoes from the Great Lakes down to the Gulf of Mexico, which killed over 150 people. The worst of it hit Tennessee, killing 60 people in that state alone, but it affected a wide swath of states, perhaps also affecting South Dakota in its wake.

The building depicted in this postcard was salvageable. The writer mentions taking more pictures of the roof to further show the damage. The main business within this building was the H.W. Reimer Hardware Store, which was sold to Stoefen & Baker not long after the 1909 twister event. It was advertised in the paper soon after that Stoefen & Baker have opened a hardware store.
