FRENCH COMMEMORATIVEFOLD-OUT PHOTOGRAPH OF THE ROYAL YACHT VICTORIA & ALBERT 1858

Thisitem is; Fold-out commemorative albumen photographof the Royal YachtVICTORIA and ALBERTtaken prior to departing Portsmouth England August 4th, 1858,for Cherbourg France and the Royal meeting with Napolean III of France.

Photowas taken by the well-known Portsmouth Artist Richard Poate (two other similarimages from the collection of Prince Albert by Richard Poate & Co.,Portsmouth, RCIN 2932767 & glass plate negative RCIN 2084834). Image size 71/2' x 5" Overall fold-out 21" l x 8 1/4' w. (Poate produced albumen salted paper prints fromcollodion on glassnegatives. The smooth surface and high resolution of the collodion platesrenderedfar sharper prints than those madefrom paper-based negatives).

On August 8th,1858, the Queen of England embarked Cherbourg for England after her visit withNapolean III for the inauguration of the newly build harbor at Cherbourg.

*Napolean claim thatthe new harbor was not for military purpose did not sit well with the Queen!

Royal Yacht

Victoria and Albert

This was the second Royal Yacht and was built and launched at HMDockyard, Pembroke Wales in 1855. Measuring 300 feet in length by 40 feet inthe beam, it had a displacement tonnage of 2479 and was capable of 14¾ knotsservice speed. During her first voyage in 1855 and on many subsequent occasionsshe proved to be a good sea boat. Queen Victoria used her extensively,including periodic reviews of the fleet, inspection of ships and officialvisits to various United Kingdom and continental ports. After an extensiverefit in 1868 the Royal Yacht continued in service until 1901. She waseventually broken up in 1904.
