This is an antique book which really wants to be in a museum or specialist collection as it is very interesting and very rare and from a very important famous peerage private library.
It has everything going for it when you get into it .. at first glance it looks like a raggy old worn leather bound big book relating to religion.
It is far from that.
The book is in a rough state to be fair and the latter years it has not been as well looked after as it should have been.
You will see the brown leather is coming away from the inner boards especially on the front.. it has a hole in the leather at the front bottom corner and scuffs and rubs up the side and spine.
The spine has the 8 raised spines and these are worn.. top and bottom leather is worn, cuts and bruises to the front and back leather too.. discolouration and stains. You can see the remains of fine embossed tooling on the very edge of the covers.
Opening the front cover as stated the leather has become unstitched and can be peeled back to see the main stiff board... you can see the leather thonging on the inner spine part holding the cover to the pages.
This board has some hand written words in dip ink pen
KIVETON
A
32
as well as a printed bit of paper stuck in .... this is a bookplate end paper of a personal private library ... Peerage Family Coat of Arms with motto PAX IN BELLO and LEEDS, then in dip ink pen again Leeds 1901.
This can be identified as the family coat of arms of the peerage Baron Osborne family of Kiveton.
So from this single bit of stuck in paper one knows that this book once belonged to the Duke of Leeds family.
.
Then you are into the book.. the first page has been torn out.. a small margin remains.. the next two pages are rough on their edges.
The next page is the wonderful TITLE page.
In red and black it is difficult to read for a layman like myself. A really nice pictorial engraving at the bottom.
NOVI
TESTAMANTI
CATHOLICA EXPO-
SITIO ECCLESIASTICA
EX PROBATIS THEOLOGIS, QVOS... and carries on with more Latin writing.
Author AUGUSTINO MARLORATO and down at the bottom the publisher is Sumptibus Viduae Iohannis Commelini.
Then for the very first time I have ever seen the date in Roman numerals written like this... strange but these are SPECIAL numbers.... they look back to front but they are the date 1620.
Turning the title page over you see another single stuck on bit of paper in the centre of the page.. another bookplate of
The Right Noble Thomas Duke of Leeds, Marquiss of Carmarthen, Earl of Danby, Viscount Latimer & Dumblan, Baron Osborne of Kiveton and Knight of Ye Most Noble Order of Ye Garter . 1701.
So this book was once in the private library of Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds ( 1632 - 1712 ) then of course passed down the family to the other Dukes.
Interesting reading about this family and what they did for Yorkshire and where they lived etc. You must take the time to google the family.. once upon a time I used to be able to add links .. but does not allow that anymore.
Then the book caries on with what it is about.. there are some really nice engravings.. could be wood, copper or steel engravings not sure but they are fine detail.
The first pew pages have slightly larger print than the rest of the pages.
The page edges are raggy, torn and creased in places.. some pages do have slight tears and spotting. Some pages are darker than others which I think was done when made, see the photographs where I do show some darker pages.
But overall inside this book is very good.
There are 1194 pages and this page has the little engraving in the triangular shape with the ladies HEAD mask in the design... then there are 31 pages of INDEX in much smaller font and ends in FINIS. Some of these index pages have the bottom right hand corner creased.
Then finally 2 blank pages and two small margins like there was 1 at the front which I thought was torn off .. but I think its been made like this.. as there are two small margin pages in the back.
The back board is good and the leather cover has simply been turned over it and its loose.. so again probably was made like this or had some sort of animal fat glue holding it down...it is loose now.. but not damaged as such like the front cover is loose and coming away from the board.
The book is 15 and half inch long x 10 and half inch wide x 3 and half inch deep... it weighs just over 4 and half kilos...which is heavy and will be sent to you overseas via GLOBAL PRIORITY....the safest and quickest way of sending heavy items all over the world.
A very nice antique book which has done well to survive considering the family home Kiveton Hall near Rotherham in South Yorkshire...built by Thomas in 1678 and then later demolished by the 6th Duke of Leeds in 1812.
Hornby Castle became their seat near Bedale in North Yorkshire.
This is a very worthwhile book...and I am proud to be the current owner of it.
