RPPC postcard USS HELENA CL-50 BATTLESHIP torpedoed Pearl Harbor WW2 Navy blimp:
$30.00

RPPC photo postcard - USS HELENA (CL-50), official US Navy photo (with Goodyear-built US Navy K-class blimp airship above); a Brooklyn-class light cruiser built for the United States Navy in the late 1930s, Helena was torpedoed at the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and was repaired and modernized in early 1942, then served at Guadalcanal, and then at the Battle of Kula Gulf, where she was torpedoed and sunk. Most of her crew were picked up by a pair of destroyers and one group landed on New Georgia where they were evacuated the next day, but more than a hundred remained at sea for two days, ultimately making land on Japanese-occupied Vella Lavella. There, they were hidden from Japanese patrols by Solomon Islanders and a coastwatcher detachment before being evacuated on the night of 15–16 July. Helena's wreck was located in 2018 by Paul Allen. EKC mark on the back, circa the 1940's. Seems to be an uncommon card.Condition: VG+ (minor edge wear, pencil notes to reverse).(Used, Vintage, Paper, Ephemera, Postcard, Photo, History, Military, WWII, Transportation, Boats, Ships, Battleship, Destroyer, Steamer, Maritime, Nautical, Naval, US Navy, United States, 1940's, Memorabilia, Collectables)
