ROYAL NAVY TYPE 15 ANTI-SUBMARINE FRIGATE HMS WHIRLWIND c 1953:

HMSWhirlwindwaslaunchedon 30 August 1943 as a W class destroyer and saw service near the end of WWII

Whirlwindwasbased at Rosyth in 1947 and 1948 as a boys training ship.Between 1952 and1953 she was converted into a Type 15fast anti-submarinefrigatewith the new pennant number F187.

She re-commissioned into the 5th Frigate Squadron on 28 July1953for service in the Mediterranean. In 1954 she participated in therecovery of the wreckage of the crashed de Havilland Comet off the island ofElba. In 1956 she was part of the Royal Navy force deployed to the EasternMediterranean as part of the Suez crisis.She also undertook patrols offthe Cyprus coast. Between June 1959 and May 1961 she underwent a refit atRosyth.

In 1961Whirlwindre-commissioned into the 8th FrigateSquadronfor service at Home and in the West Indies.

In1966Whirlwindwas placed on the disposal list. On 12 August1969 she was towed from Portsmouth to Pembroke Dock for use as a target. Shefoundered at her moorings inCardigan Bayon 29 October 1974 while inuse as a target.
