HMS EURYALUSMALTA c 1971HMSEuryaluswaslaunched on 6 June 1963 and commissioned on 16 September 1964 On commissioningEuryalusbecame Leader of the 26th Escort Squadron based in the Far East. Shetook part in the Indonesian Confrontation. In 1966Euryalusrecommissioned and went into refit in Devonport, joining STANAVFORLANT on completion. She deployed to the Far East again in December 1967 as Leader of the 1st Frigate Squadronand spent Christmas in Simonstown. Early in 1968 she carried out a six-week Beira Patrolfollowed by a week on Internal Security duty in Mauritiuswhich was approaching independence, which had caused the different racial groups there to jostle violently for position. This deployment to the Far East continued with visits to Sydney, Auckland, Yokohama, Hong Kongand Singapore before returning home in December 1968 via Auckland, Fiji, Hawaii, San Diego and the Panama Canal. In 1969,Euryalusagain returned to the Far East, which also had a substantial Royal Navy presence at the time. In 1970,Euryalusbecame Gibraltarguard ship, a role that a number ofLeandersperformed. In 1972,Euryalusundertook another Beira Patrol. In 1978,Euryaluswas a member of the 2nd Frigate Squadronmore commonly known as the Portland Training Squadron. Euryalusdecommissioned on 31 March 1989 and the following yearEuryaluswas sold for breaking along with HMSAjax.
