It was a pretty brave choice of paint colors “The Rock”
made for its new look, begun in 1975, as locos were
due for heavy shop work. First loco to turn blue was a
GP7. Few railroads had ever painted a locomotive
“powder blue” as some of us called GM autos of earlier
years...some called it Ferrington blue...Santa Fe had
a steamer nicked the “Blue Goose”...the L&HR, Great
Northern “Big Sky Blue,” and of course Conrail blues
were darker. Maybe there were others but they don’t
quickly come to mind. At any rate, it was eye-catching
and weathered better than expected. Andy’s rendering
depicts GP38-2 #4343, “City of Little Rock” readying
for its next assignment. We notice its standard Blom-
berg trucks don’t have the usual Dash-2 “snubbers.”
The Rock was a thrifty railroad. Most but not all of
the new GP38-2s, numbered from 4300 to 4379 (with
a gap from 4356 to 57) were given names. Most of
them found a home on MoP after The Rock gave up
the ghost. A terrific painting for fans of the CRI&P!
