PEARY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 02/15/1903 - HFSID 56624ROBERT E. PEARY. ALS: \"R.E. Peary\", 2¼p, 4½x7, front and verso. Grand Union Hotel, N.Y., 1903 February 15. To Mr. Rideing. In full: \"Continuous demands upon my time from one source & another have kept me from giving your request the attention it should have had. I have thought of a number of subjects, but none that seemed satisfactory to me except the following. \'Thalarktokroah the Gray King\' This would be the story of the splendid great Eskimo dog, leader of my team & my almost constant companion for four years past. I could write from my heart about him & his experiences (bear & musk-ox fights) & splendid work; & I believe I could touch the heart of every live boy & perhaps some men. But perhaps you are or have been sated with dog stories.\" Robert E. Peary began his Arctic exploration with voyages to Greenland in 1886 and 1891-1892. On his third voyage (1893-1895), he failed to reach the North Pole. His fourth voyage (1898-1902) reached 84ยบ 17\', the farthest north in the American Arctic. It was during this expedition that his Eskimo dog, Thalarktokroah, led his team. On April 6, 1909, Peary became the first to reach the North Pole. Vertical fold touches the \"R\".
