Nancy Youngblood (1953- ) is a preeminent potter from the Santa Clara Pueblo and, possibly, aneighth generation potter. Her mother was Mela Youngblood; her grandmother was the legendary Margaret Tafoya and her great-grandmother was Serafina Tafoya. Her great-uncle, Camilio Tafoya, inspired her to perfect the swirl melon bowls for which she isrenowned. Youngblood\'s pottery combines the Tafoya family traditions of using local clays, coiling, carving, polishing and firing, with her own innovations:
  • Early focus on miniatures: She created intricate forms and tightly carved design, all less than 3 inches high by 3 inches wide.
  • Emphasis on ribs: Youngblood\'s styles includestraight ribs, swirl ribs and S swirl ribs.
  • Polishing perfection: It takes a minimum of onehour to polish each rib on her pottery. She uses her great-grandmother\'s smooth black stone and several small flat pointed stones that fit into the deep ridges of her melon jars.
  • Variations in size and shape: She has added tall vases with lids, as well as swirled and fluted water jars and bowls influenced by Japanese designs.
Nancy Youngblood has won numerous national and international awards, including Best of Show (1989), Best of Pottery (2015) and Best of Pottery (2018) at the SWAIA (Southwestern Association for Indian Arts) Santa Fe Indian Market. She also has been featured in numerous books, such as The Art of Clay, Born of Fire, and Crafted of Perfection. Her works are in numerous private and public collections; most notably the Smithsonian Institution.
