InVolume 2 the reader will become acquainted with the fascinatingvariety of diesel locomotives on the Readingbetween 1962 and 1976.

Thissecond volume of Reading Diesels describes the locomotives theReading Railroad placed in service between 1962 and 1976. Inaddition, locomotives rebuilt by the Reading and the changes inlocomotive classification and numbering introduced during these yearsare included. While the variety of locomotives in the secondgeneration was less than that of the first, the new bright paintschemes were far more colorful. Studies are included thatexplain the rationale behind the switch to second generationlocomotives. The Reading was the first railroad to purchase the EMDGP30, the first of the second generation diesel locomotives. Ina less successful venture the Reading also purchased the AmericanLocomotive Company's first C430 models and ceremoniously gave namesto these two companies. A description of the Reading'sattempt to meet the challenges of declining passenger train ridershipby acquiring a fleet of Budd Rail Diesel Cars in the 1960s isexamined. While many of the railroad's locomotives sharedfeatures in common with locomotives from other railroads across theUnited States, it had perhaps more than its share of locomotives withcustom features. The unique drip strips, a feature which sets apartall Reading diesel locomotives, were applied to all second generationlocomotives, continuing a practice that began when the Readingdieselized. An attempt has been made to update the existenceand location of former Reading second generation diesels into the1990s. This book contains freight train symbols, schedulesand locomotive tonnage ratings, as well as a look a what eachlocomotive was doing, and where it could be found, on June 30, 1969.This information should be especially useful for those modeling theReading in this era. An interesting study made by therailroad of its six axle locomotives is included.
