RARE antique bookends Chained Andromeda mythology artist Gustavo Obiols, 8 lbs:

Poor Andromeda. Her mother, Cassiopeia, boasted that Andromeda was even more beautiful than the Nereids whose father, Poseidon, took umbrage and sent the sea monster, Cetus, to ravage the coastline of their country. To appease Poseidon, Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice. Fortunately for her, Perseus happened along and saved her by using Medusa\'s severed head to turn the sea monster into stone.
\"Chained Andromeda\" is the work of the Spanish artist, Gustavo Obiols (1858-1910). Each piece bears his name on the front. Obiols had many works cast in bronze by French foundries in the late 19th C and early 20th C.
I thought these were bronze when I acquired them, but now wonder if instead they are grey metal (spelter). Hollow-cast and weighted in the interior. I don\'t see seams between the figure and her base but assume Andromeda was cast separately. Both figures are fixed firmly without wiggle. No maker\'s mark so I don\'t know if these are US made or perhaps European. The casting holes in the bottoms and backs are not something I am accustomed to seeing on domestic work, nor is the sealed bottom. Because of these, I am inclined to think these are French made. Probably very early 1900\'s.
Condition is fine. A ding to the metal on one side (see last pic); otherwise, no damage. Finishes are in excellent shape. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
6 inches tall; base is 4 3/4 inches X 2 inches. Heavy at 4 pounds EACH PIECE.
